Poppys Story

Wednesday 19th Mar
On the 14th September 2022 Poppy was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a normal day, off to school and work.. upon collection, Poppy wasn't herself at all, she was burning up, seemed very dazed and couldnt walk.

I picked her up and rushed her to my mum's where she was sick, I then believed that Poppy had a sickness bug, gave her Calpol, some water and took her home. She had been complaining of stomach ache and I had been InTouch with drs previously and was waiting for a phone call back as I believed she may have had a water infection, we had a really hot summer that year so the thirsty symptoms went over my head. After a call back from the Dr - they advised I kept her hydrated and wouldn't be able to see her until the Friday.

After the phonecall I sat with Poppy as she lay sleeping on the sofa, her breathing was rapid, everything felt wrong. So I opted to not wait and took her straight to a&e. This is where she went down hill and fast.

We was seen by a triage nurse that even with the machine flashing red, fast heart rate, low BP, low oxygen.. she was happy to send us over to the on call Dr for grabadoc. I refused to leave as I knew something was wrong, on our way back to the waiting area Poppy was sick again, this time it looked like mould, they call this coffee ground sick - she was actually internal bleeding. I said to the nurse that I was concerned she may be a diabetic as she had been thirsty alot and lost weight. When they finally done the test her sugars were up at 30+, her ketones was 8.4 and she was barely staying awake at this point. Hearing those words for the first time and seeing the room full of drs - feeling so alone was the most overwhelming feeling of my life. I truly thought I was going to lose her. After a scary 24-48hrs Poppy was being treated with life saving medicine and without that medicine I wouldn't have my baby girl. The words that have always stuck with me is if I had waited until Friday it would have probably been to late.. to be told that as a parent is the most devastating thing you could hear! I am so thankful that I didn't wait and that we went when we did.

Life has been hard, lots of learning, lots of highs and lows literally 😅 but she is here and she is smashing life! Living her best life everyday. ❤️ And I am here holding her hand every step of the way, always and forever ♾️
