One Walk Manchester 2025

We're stronger together

I’m taking part in One Walk Manchester to help raise money to fund life-changing research and make a difference to the lives of people affected by type 1!

Breakthrough T1D funds world-class research, supports the T1D community and campaigns for broader NHS provision of treatments and technologies. Their collaborations with the best researchers in the world have led to new developments in diabetes technology and treatment.

This is where you come in. With your support and your generous donations, we can fund Breakthrough T1D’s important work.

Just £20 could help towards the next big T1D breakthrough.

Whatever you can donate, it is really appreciated - Thank you!

Your support to my challenge has helped me provide:

316

minutes of Breakthrough T1D research bringing us closer to a cure for T1D.

OR

158

printed copies of Breakthrough T1D's Straight to the Point guide. It covers vital information for anyone living with T1D to help manage the condition.

OR

12

children to have an initial screening test to help to detect T1D in its earliest stages to prevent un-diagnosed complications.

My Updates

Insulin

Tuesday 6th May
Most people with type 1 diabetes take two types of insulin, a long acting insulin (also called background or basal insulin) this is usually taken once or twice a day. And rapid acting insulin (also called bolus insulin) which is taken with food or to correct high glucose levels.

Imogen had insulin injections multiple times a day and night from November 2018.

In June 2022 Imogen received funding from the NHS to get an insulin pump, insulin is injected into a device which is then applied to the skin, a small cannula is then pushed under the skin and insulin is then able to enter the body without injections.

Imogen’s insulin pump is changed every 3 days, pump sites have to be alternately used to avoid lumps of insulin building up under the skin. Imogen issues the back of her arms, belly and thighs.

Glucose levels

Sunday 4th May
Over 40 different factors can affect diabetes and glucose levels.

This factors usually fall into five different categories

1. Food - food high in fats such as pizza will cause a delayed spike in blood sugars
2. Activity - Going for a long walk for example could cause blood sugars to drop to a low level
3. Medications - timing of insulin or dosage can affect blood glucose levels
4. Biological factors - being stressed or excited can cause blood sugars to rise
5. Environmental factors - being on holiday in a hot country usually means Imogen needs much less insulin than usual.

We initially monitored Imogen blood sugars by pricking her finger and putting a small amount of blood in a machine.

Imogen then got funding for a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). This works by inserting a small sensor under the skin, this monitors glucose levels and wirelessly transmits data to Imogen’s mobile phone. It also alarms to warn Imogen of high and low blood sugars. Mum has a follow on app on her phone, she can check Imogen’s blood sugars even when they aren’t together.

Imogen’s CGM needs changing every 10 days, we usually alternate the back of her arms.

My diagnosis on Friday 23rd November 2018

Saturday 3rd May
Imogen was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 8 years old. Her mum and dad didn’t recognise the signs of her extreme thirst and sleepiness.
A nurse asked if Imogen was using the toilet more at an appointment about a rash, she then tested Imogen’s glucose by taking a small dot of blood from her thumb.

The reading was 27 and she was sent to Oldham Hospital. A blood test was taken and a doctor said she had type 1 diabetes and must be injected with insulin immediately and would insulin dependent for the rest of her life.

Mum and dad asked for a second opinion, Imogen had a healthy diet and was scared of needles.

The doctor explained she would be admitted for at least a week, mum and dad would be taught how to inject Imogen and take care of her and left untreated Imogen would quickly become fatally unwell.

Mum n dad didn’t know
🩵 the three T’s - the common symptoms of type 1 are, tired, thirsty and thin
🩵 A normal glucose reading is between 4-7. Under 4 is hypoglycaemia which is a medical emergency. Above 7 is called hyperglycaemia
🩵Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease and is not caused by diet or lifestyle and it cannot be prevented
🩵A life threatening complication of type 1 is diabetes is diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)

My wish

Friday 2nd May
I am walking to raise funds for type 1 diabetes - an autoimmune disease that I was diagnosed with at 8 years old.
Type 1 diabetes affects millions of adults and children, it requires constant management and there is currently no known cure.

Sponsoring me will help fund crucial research and support families. Every pound brings us closer to treatments, and one day, hopefully a cure.

By sponsoring me, you’re not just sponsoring my walk - your supporting every person living with type 1 diabetes.

Thank you to my Sponsors
