One Walk Falkirk 2025

We're stronger together

On the 1st June, the Pennie’s will be taking part in a 5k walk to raise money for the charity Breakthrough T1D in the hopes to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. We have chosen 5k so that Zachary can walk with us.

On the 27th December 2024, our son Zachary was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the young age of 4. This has turned our lives upside down and this is something Zachary will now have to live with for the rest of his life.

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. This means that Zachary has to have up to 6 insulin injections a day to control his blood sugar levels as his body can no longer do this for him. This is not something that can be prevented, nor cured.

Type 1 Diabetes is not as simple as just injecting insulin for the food you eat. Every meal that Zachary eats has to be carb counted and insulin given to him based on this and his blood sugar levels at the time of his meal. There is also a complex blood sugar reaction that is impacted by over forty variables, such as sleep, exercise, illness, and even the weather. Every day is different to the next and very unpredictable. Although there will never be a single waking minute off of managing type 1, we will never let it rule Zachary’s life and we stay hopeful in the progress of science, research and a cure. This is why we are walking to raise money that will be invested in this.

We appreciate any donation no matter how big or small to go towards a cause that will forever be a part of our lives.
