Climbing for Penny

Climb for Type 1 - Ben Nevis

400,000 people currently live with type 1 diabetes in the UK and I want to play my part in changing that.

I’m joining Team JDRF for Climb 1 For Type 1: Ben Nevis on Saturday 17 August. I’ll be hiking knowing I'm helping make a difference to the lives of people living with type 1.

JDRF UK fund world-class research that one day will cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes and its complications. JDRF also support the type 1 community and campaign for broader access to life-changing treatments. Their collaborations with the best researchers in the world have led to new developments in diabetes technology and treatment.

Please can you help me smash my fundraising target of £300? With your support and your generous donations, we can fund JDRF UK’s important work. Just £20 could help towards the next big breakthrough. Whatever you can donate, it is really appreciated.

Together, we can help JDRF towards its vision of a world without type 1 diabetes.

Penny the T1 Warrior

Thursday 1st Aug
Type 1 diabetes is a relentless, chronic illness where blood glucose levels are constantly monitored. The food Penny eats has to be carb counted and worked out in ratios to give the amount of insulin that she needs. Too much or too little insulin can be dangerous. There are also so many elements that affect blood glucose levels other than food: the temperature, illness, physical activity, stress / upset- the list goes on. Levels need to be managed to avoid severe illness and even death, if they are not managed well it can lead to major complications in later life. Penny was diagnosed at 5 years old and battles this disease incredible well.

Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune disease and it can happen to anyone at any point in their lives, there is no age limit. It is not preventable and there is no cure (yet!).
The pancreas just stops producing insulin (a hormone) which controls blood glucose.
