My Journey
Hi, my name is Skyla and I am 5 years old.
A few days after my 4th birthday, my life changed because I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This means my body doesn’t make insulin properly, so every day I have to check my blood sugars, have insulin, wear my Omnipod, and be really brave even when things feel hard.
The last year has been a big journey for me and my family. I have had to learn things that most children my age don’t have to think about, like counting carbohydrates, checking my levels, understanding when I feel too high or too low, and having lots of help to keep me safe and well.
Some days are easier than others, but I try my best every single day. My family are so proud of how brave I have been, and now I want to do something special to help other children and families who live with Type 1 diabetes too.
I am taking part in a 5km walk with my family to raise money and awareness for Type 1 diabetes. It is a big walk for little legs, but I am excited to do it and show how strong I can be. I even get to wear a superhero cape!
