Our superstar

We are taking part in One Walk Manchester to help raise vital funds for life‑changing research and to make a real difference to the lives of people affected by Type 1 diabetes.

In January this year, our family’s world was suddenly and completely turned upside down. Sophie, who is just 8 years old, was rushed to hospital and admitted straight into intensive care. She was critically ill with diabetic ketoacidosis (her blood had become dangerously acidic) and had extremely low potassium levels. We were told that Sophie had an undiagnosed autoimmune condition — Type 1 diabetes — which meant her pancreas was no longer working. From that moment, her life would require lifelong medical treatment.

As parents, watching our baby girl so unwell was utterly traumatising. Coming to terms with the reality that this is a lifelong condition, and understanding the impact it will have on Sophie and her future, has at times been incredibly hard to accept. As parents we wish we could take it from her, and we would, in a heartbeat.

Throughout it all, Sophie has shown nothing but strength, resilience and kindness. Even during our darkest days in hospital, she never failed to put a smile on our faces. In such a short space of time, she has faced challenges that would be extremely difficult even for an adult, and she has done so with bravery beyond her years.

With the incredible support of Sophie’s diabetes consultant, Dr Robinson, the specialist nurses Kerry and Kirsty who worked tirelessly with us day and night, Breakthrough T1D, Sophie’s school teachers, and our wonderful friends and family who held us up when we felt broken, we have learned to understand and manage this condition. Together, we are working to give Sophie the very best quality of life possible. Before January, we had no experience or understanding of Type 1 diabetes or how relentless and all consuming it can be.

Breakthrough T1D funds world‑class research, supports the Type 1 diabetes community, and campaigns for wider NHS access to treatments and technology. Their collaboration with leading researchers worldwide has helped drive major advances in diabetes care and technology.
