Message from Cabhán

In April 2025, at 21 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and my life hasn’t been the same since.

T1D is an autoimmune condition. It is not caused by diet, weight, or lifestyle. It isn’t something you can prevent, and it isn’t the same as Type 2. It happens when your immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin, and from that moment on, you rely on injections and constant monitoring to stay alive.

My dad also lives with Type 1. There’s still no clear research proving exactly how it’s passed down genetically, but having it so close to home makes it feel even heavier. It’s hard knowing this is lifelong with no cure. Every day now means needles, carb counting, blood sugar alarms, and the fear of things going wrong.

To support research, awareness, and better treatment, my girlfriend and I will be walking 10K in support of the charity and everyone affected by Type 1 Diabetes. We’re doing this to help fund finding a cure and to help people understand this disease.
