More than a walk: supporting those living with Type 1 diabetes
Sunday 5th AprI’ve signed up to take part in the One Walk Manchester, a 10km charity walk supporting people living with Type 1 diabetes.
This one is personal. My wife lives with Type 1 diabetes, so I see first-hand what it takes to manage it every single day. The constant monitoring, the decisions, the impact it has, it never really switches off.
In the UK, around 5.8 million people are living with diabetes, but only a small proportion, around 8%, have Type 1. It’s often misunderstood and confused with Type 2 diabetes.
Both conditions are serious and deserve attention and support. But Type 1 is an autoimmune condition, it isn’t caused by lifestyle and it can’t be prevented. It requires constant management, every day.
That’s why I wanted to do something to support the work being done through research, better treatments and improved access to technology. Real progress is being made, and that matters.
A 10km walk is a challenge for me, but it’s nothing compared to the daily reality of living with Type 1 diabetes.
