Our 'Why'

Sunday 3rd May
Penny was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in April 25 at the age of 3 and her Daddy, Paul, was diagnosed with LADA in March 24 at the age of 55. In a little over a year, 50% of our family was suddenly diabetic. Type 1 diabetic.

Paul's symptoms happened over a span of 2 weeks or so. Insatiable thirst, lots of weeing, worrying weight loss, tummy pains, deterioration in eye sight and debilitating leg cramps. He went to the ED and they gave him a litre of fluids. His blood sugar was 28, luckily not in DKA...but very close. They sent him home with no means to test his blood sugars and said diabetes diagnoses is dealt with in the community. We now know, its because they had their bias hats on and believed he was Type 2. The GP nurse said there was no way he could be Type 1. We, luckily, were given appointments quickly, had bloods done and got an appointment with the diabetes team. We are forever in their debt.

Penny Pops's symptoms started for what appeared to have been over a week, during her Easter school holidays. Big wet nappies (which I put down to a new brand not being as good) and feeling really thirsty (I put it down to weather getting warmer). She went back to nursery and I noticed her uniform looked a little looser but not much. She came out of nursery and her nappy fell down on the way home because it was so heavy. I started getting niggling worries. That evening, after she had drank 3 cups (350mls) of water one after the other, I said I should do a finger prick test. We had one in the house because of Paul, we were lucky. I remember getting it all ready and as I was about to prick her finger saying please please please please under my breath. It came up HI. I wanted to burst out crying.
We went to our local ED, she was seen quickly and with confirmation from a blood gas (blood glucose was 38), she was diagnosed Type 1 and started on insulin. She wasn't, and I will never under value how lucky we were, in DKA.
She was in hospital for 3 days before we were sent home loaded with so much information, new tech we had to get to grips with and our lives all changed forever.

Penny is over a year diagnosed now and doing amazing. It hasn't been easy. The hardest lesson we have learnt is that everyday is a different day. Type 1 diabetes does its own blooming thing, even if you do everything the exact same as the day before.

We are also doing the walk to show our support for #Lylaslaw. Test don't guess.

We hope for a cure one day, so Penny can have her carefree life back 😊
