We're stronger together

I’m taking part in One Walk Manchester to help raise money to fund life-changing research and make a difference to the lives of people affected by type 1!

Breakthrough T1D funds world-class research, supports the T1D community and campaigns for broader NHS provision of treatments and technologies. Their collaborations with the best researchers in the world have led to new developments in diabetes technology and treatment.

This is where you come in. With your support and your generous donations, we can fund Breakthrough T1D’s important work.

Just £20 could help towards the next big T1D breakthrough.

Whatever you can donate, it is really appreciated - Thank you!

My Updates

Alfie

Monday 27th Apr
My name is Alfie and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes nearly 3 years ago, and I will
talk about my story and how I have adapted and overcame this huge obstacle in my life.
Months before I was diagnosed my friends and family began to notice subtle signs that
something was wrong. I experienced excessive thirst, restlessness and I kept dropping
weight no matter how much I ate. Eventually on a random morning I woke up to get a
shower until I nearly passed out in the bathroom. This was the moment my mum
realised there was something severely wrong and rushed me to the doctors where they
delivered the devastating news that turned my life upside down. I was admitted into
Warrington children's outpatients where I stayed for numerous days having tests ran,
injections and finger pricks constantly while feeling the worst I have ever felt in my life.
Eventually I was released from the hospital, and I returned home where I began to adapt
to this new routine that i would continue to follow to this day. However, it's not all bad,
while it might still be stuck with this for the time being, I have never once let it drag me
down and I continue to do everything a normal teenager would and can do. From
regaining almost 20kg while going to the gym, and pursuing my hobby of boxing, I never
once let it hold me back. Even in normal day-day life i make sure i control my diabetes
and that I don't let it control me, going to school and going out with my friends the same
as everyone else.
I will never lose hope that even more great technological advancements are made that
make all diabetics lives 100 times better, and I hope that one day there might even be a
cure to it. I hope that my story can help other kids in the same position that I was in,
keep their heads up and continue to pursue all their dreams and not let diabetes
control their life. But after all of this the main reason I am where I am today is thanks to
my Mum who has helped me more than anything through it all
