children to have an initial screening test to help to detect T1D in its earliest stages to prevent un-diagnosed complications.

400,000 people are currently living with type 1 diabetes in the UK, I want to change that.

I have registered for the Virtual Triathlon, a challenge for Breakthrough T1D (the type 1 diabetes charity). From 1 February to 29 March, I will be swimming, cycling and running (mostly through football) a half iron man -  towards a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Living with T1D, and working with young people with T1D, I can see the impact it has on people, the difficulties it adds to everyday life, and the isolation that can happen when it feels like no one else gets it, and your struggles are unnoticed. I'd like to make life a little bit easier for those people, through better treatments, provision, and maybe one day, a cure.

Breakthrough T1D funds world-class research, supports the T1D community and campaigns for broader NHS provision of treatments and technologies. Their collaborations with the best researchers in the world have led to new developments in diabetes technology and treatment.

This is where you come in. With your support and your generous donations, we can fund Breakthrough T1D’s important work. Just £20 could help towards the next big T1D breakthrough. Whatever you can donate, it is really appreciated.

It's done!

Tuesday 1st Apr
It's done! The final part of the virtual triathlon on the final day of March - the swim is done! So after running, swimming, and bmxing the distance of a half Iron Man, and raising over £350 for BreakthroughT1D, it's completed! It's been such a good challenge, especially the swimming today (in freezing cold water, it was probably the toughest part!) and for such a good cause, a charity that do so much good work for newly diagnosed people, for people who have had Type 1 Diabetes for years, for treatments and research towards a cure, and for empowering people with knowledge and information on their condition. Thank you so much to every person who donated or shared! 💚 There's still time to donate now if you'd like to: https://support.breakthrought1d.org.uk/fundraisers/lawrencehayward

Another 16km done!

50% Cycling, 100% Funding!!!

Tuesday 11th Mar
THANK YOU SO MUCH! The £150 target has been reached! Thanks for sharing the page and donating, it's such an important cause and really close to my heart, so this means a lot. I've seen some of the work Breakthrough T1D do, and they are easily one of the most positive charities that support people with T1D. As we hit the goal and there's still a fair while yet, I'm going to make a stretch-goal of £300, because honestly the more I/we can support this charity, the more support, and also hope, we can give to the thousands of people living with type one diabetes. You can see some of the numbers and things that this will fund if you scroll down on my page. Again, thank you :) I also recently I hit 50% of my cycling goal, doing 15km on my bmx on Sunday! I've now done 45km, and have 45km to go before the end of this month! I'm trying to hit the cycling goal of this half iron-man with a bit of extra challenge... Completing the ~90km on my bmx doing jumps. It makes it a lot trickier - you'd be suprised how tiring just 1 lap (~150m) is, when you're pumping up and down to move forwards, and jumping too. But I love a challenge and can't think of a more me way to do it (also I literally don't have a normal bike so not sure I have a choice lol). In the pic is a sunset of the evening I spent riding... Honestly the sunsets here never miss 👌

10k done! 80km to go!

Saturday 1st Mar
This is harder than I thought... I'm raising money for Breakthrough T1D, a charity that helps support people with type one diabetes, researches and funds treatment and (hopefully one day) a cure. So in the months of Feb and March I'm doing a virtual half Iron-Man, and this is one of the biggest cycling sessions towards that goal. Of course I'm doing it with a twist, I'm meeting my cycling goal on a BMX, probably making it twice as difficult, but also getting airtime and challenging myself. This is my first big session, over 3 hours, and I was so exhausted after it I went straight home and to bed! If you want to donate to support me and a brilliant charity that does so much, you're in the right place 👌 10K done! 80km to go!

First Steps...

Sunday 16th Feb
Thank you so much for £40! I've not posted much yet as I'm just beginning the challenge to do the equivalent of a half Iron Man over Feb and March. So to already have raised £40 for such a good cause that's so close to my heart - that means a lot, thank you!
I've been trying to take it easy on the shins the last few weeks, as shortly after signing up to do the half Iron Man, I realised I had shin splints, which is impeccable timing... I'm going to keep cracking on with it though, and so far have run 10 of the 13.1 miles through football. However, the biking may prove a bit more difficult as it's a much further distance, and I only have the bmx right now... But it's easier on the shins and I'm up for the challenge, even if it means a good chunk of those 56 miles of biking are done at a pump track and getting some airtime...
