Wednesday 29th AprI’m taking on the 5km Edinburgh One Walk with family to support Breakthrough T1D. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 13, and it completely changed my life and my families. What a lot of people don’t see is that it’s not just about injections or blood sugar levels it’s constant. It’s constant decisions, carb counting, working out how my day will affect my sugar, worries, and interruptions, even in the middle of the night.
What’s harder to explain is the mental side of it. The burnout, the frustration, and the worry that builds up over time from having to deal with it every single day with no break. Always having to stay in control of something that can change so quickly can be exhausting, and it’s something so many people with type 1 diabetes struggle.
Diabetes also affects the people around me. From the first day of diagnosis, my family have had to carry the worry with me. It’s something that they don’t get to turn off either. They also have to learn everything alongside me, the routines, the carb counting, calculating insulin doses etc and the signs when something isn’t quite right.
This cause is incredibly personal to me as Breakthrough T1D is funding life-changing research to improve treatments and move us closer to a cure something that would completely change the lives of so many people living with this condition and those around them.
By supporting me, you’re not just helping fund research you’re helping bring hope to other people who struggle with type 1 diabetes. If you’re able to donate, no matter how small, or even just share this page, it would genuinely mean so much. Thank you for your support. 💙
