One Walk Manchester

Penelope's Story

Penelope had the chicken pox last summer but she never quite made a proper recovery and over a couple of months was getting progressively worse. We decided to take her to the walk in centre at the start of September and were sent straight to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. After 3 nights in hospital and what seemed like 100's of tests, finger pricks, injections, she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

From the outside I don't think anybody truly understands the impact this disease has until you experience it yourself. My dad suffered from Type 2 Diabetes for around 20 years so it wasn't all completely new to us.

This really is a horrible disease though and has completely changed our lives forever. No two days are ever the same, we constantly face new challenges and careful planning has to go into everything we do now.

One thing has remained the same though and it really is amazing to see and that is Penelope's attitude towards everything. She is still the same happy, crazy little girl everyone loves and just takes everything that is thrown at her in her stride. She really is an inspiration to us and we could not be prouder of her!

So we have decided to sign up to the Breakthrough T1D 10km walk in Manchester on Saturday 9th May to help raise money to hopefully one day find a cure for this horrible disease.

Thank you for taking to the time to read our story and if you can make any donation (no matter the size) it would be greatly appreciated.
