Why should you join Team Breakthrough T1D?

Our Reason Why

Our 10-year-old daughter Bella was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in June last year.

After a few frightening days in hospital—and many ups and downs since—we’ve been learning how to live with T1. It’s been a steep learning curve.

There are constant decisions to make, endless calculations, the challenge of managing both physical pain and mental health, all on top of sleepless nights. Staying on top of medical supplies, snacks, and device change dates—while juggling two jobs and three kids—is a task in itself.

We already feel like we’ve climbed a mountain.

Breakthrough T1D has been an incredible support since day one. Their resources at diagnosis were clear, practical, and easy to understand. Their website is user-friendly, and we even used their school pack to educate Bella’s teachers. The email updates on research developments give us hope—for an easier future for Bella, and maybe even a cure.

This year, we’ve set our sights on a new challenge—climbing Ben Nevis to raise funds and awareness. We’re so grateful (and a little overwhelmed!) to have already surpassed our fundraising goal.

Here's our top fundraising tip to you:

Reach out to your network—family, friends, colleagues, social media contacts, every WhatsApp group you’ve ever been in! Share your story. Post training updates, fundraising milestones, and photos or videos of your challenge. People want to help—they just need to see why it matters.

I’d take Type 1 from Bella in a heartbeat. But until that’s possible, this challenge is our small way of raising awareness, supporting other families like ours, and contributing to the research that could one day change everything—for Bella, and for everyone living with T1.
