Breakthrough T1D funds world-class research, supports the T1D community and campaigns for broader NHS provision of treatments and technologies. Their collaborations with the best researchers in the world have led to new developments in diabetes technology and treatment.

Isla's T1 Diabetes Journey

Thursday 8th May
Isla was diagnosed aged 3 with Type 1 Diabetes after showing all of the 4 T's 

- Thirsty
- Tired
- Thinner
- Toilet 

We were lucky enough that her wonderful aunt was a nurse and advised we get her checked otherwise some of those symptoms would have been missed as it was peak summer so being a tired and thirsty 3 year old was the norm.

We caught Isla's diagnosis super early but what lay ahead was a shock to us all. 

Diabetes is life changing, for everyone involved. Overnight we went from parents to doctors, administering insulin via injections, becoming carb counting pros, tech wizzes and everything in between. And our beautiful little girl had to just get on with it, there was no choice - it was so hard educating her on how permanent this change was for her. 

It was scary, heart-breaking and exhausting - still is truth be told. But every day Isla amazes us, we try to fill her with the confidence she needs to go out into the world and breakthrough her goals. Those moments when she feels "different" are so heavy hitting but we battle through and assure her she is the most amazing, caring, beautiful little girl and this one little thing does not define her. 

We're walking the T1 Breakthrough Cymru walk to further embed the fact she is not alone, she is not different and she is able to achieve anything she wants to in life.
