Marching for Miracles- Team Elsie

One Walk London 2025

One walk 2025

On 10th November 2022 Elsie aged four was unwell with a virus. We visited the doctors as Lewis and I became concerned with the amount Elsie was drinking and visiting the toilet. The doctor said it was a virus I just knew it was more than this  so visited urgent care walk in that same day. Here we were admitted into hospital and Elsie was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 Diabetes is a serious condition where your blood glucose (sugar) levels are too high because your body can’t make a hormone called insulin.

This happens because your body attacks the cells in your pancreas that make the insulin, meaning you can’t produce any at all.

What causes Type 1 Diabetes?

It is still unsure what causes Type 1 Diabetes to develop. It’s got nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. But researchers and scientists around the world are working hard to find answers.

When Elsie was diagnosed the hospital checked to see if she was in DKA.

What is DKA?

DKA is a serious side effect of Diabetes. Diabetic ketoacidosis, also known as DKA, is when there is a severe lack of insulin in the body. This means the body can’t use sugar for energy, and starts to use fat instead. When this happens, chemicals called ketones are released which can make you very unwell. Thankfully, we caught symptoms early before this happened as for many first diagnosed this is not always the case and are diagnosed when they are already in DKA.

Elsie is such a warrior and takes every finger prick, injection, pod change and glucose monitor change, hypo, hyper and broken sleep due to these factors of having type 1 diabetes all in her stride. We wish she didn’t have to encounter these things and really hope for a cure.

We are doing this walk with Elsie,  Archie, (who is such an amazing big brother and really looks after his sister) and our amazing family and friends to raise awareness of the condition and raise money for vital research, hopefully getting closer to a cure for Elsie and all others living with type 1 diabetes.

Please sponsor if you can, no amount is too small and every penny will be much appreciated!

400,000 people are currently living with type 1 diabetes in the UK, we want to change that.

We're taking part in One Walk London to help raise money to fund life-changing research and make a difference to the lives of people affected by type 1!

Breakthrough T1D funds world-class research, supports the T1D community and campaigns for broader NHS provision of treatments and technologies. Their collaborations with the best researchers in the world have led to new developments in diabetes technology and treatment.
