Living Bravely: My Son’s Journey with Type 1 Diabetes

Saturday 7th Jun

When my son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, our world shifted in an instant. The diagnosis came with a flood of emotions—fear, uncertainty, and a deep worry about what the future might hold. But over time, that fear has given way to something far more powerful: pride.

Watching him adapt to life with diabetes has been nothing short of incredible.

At first, the daily routine of finger pricks, insulin injections, and carb counting felt overwhelming—for both of us. But step by step, he began to take control. He started learning what his body needs, how to manage highs and lows, and how to speak up for himself at school and with friends.

One of the most inspiring things has been his attitude. He doesn’t see diabetes as something that holds him back. Instead, he’s learning how to live with it—not just to manage it, but to thrive in spite of it. He’s becoming more independent, more informed, and more in tune with his health than many adults ever are.

Of course, it’s not always easy. There are hard days, unexpected blood sugar swings, and moments of frustration. But we face those together. And each time he overcomes a challenge, I see just how strong and capable he truly is.

This journey has taught us both so much. It’s shown us the importance of resilience, self-care, and the power of community. And it’s reminded me every day how courageous my son is.

To any parent just starting out on this journey: it gets better. Your child is stronger than you think. And with the right support, they’ll learn to live not just with diabetes—but beyond it.
